Installing casing with hot melt glue and a glue gun

Glue is a good option when you install inner door and window casings, as the casing is often light and does not need to withstand much load. In addition, you avoid making holes in the casing or wall. What you need to consider is that glue can make it more difficult to remove the casing later. You can read more here about which glue and glue guns are best suited for installing casing.

Choosing the right hot melt glue and glue gun when you install casing

We recommend that you use special adhesive for wood or plastic, depending on the material the casing is made of, as this provides extra durable adhesion.

Choose the length of glue stick based on the size of the job – a short glue stick contains less glue and is suitable when you are gluing the odd casing, while a long glue stick is the best choice for major projects.

Choosing the right glue gun when you glue casing

Installing inner door and window casings usually requires a lot of glue. So we recommend that you use a powerful glue gun with a high glue flow, which also makes it easier to work quickly over large surfaces. It’s also a good idea if the glue gun has exchangeable nozzles, so that you can adjust the glue flow as needed, to get into corners or cover wide surfaces for example.

A few tips when you glue casing

Protect the floor

Use a protective sheet to protect the floor and other surfaces from glue.

Prepare carefully

Measure and saw each element – first the side pieces, then the upper piece. Use a mitre saw to get precision intersections.

Make sure that the surfaces are clean and dry

Wipe off dirt and dust from the surfaces before you glue, otherwise the adhesive strength is compromised. It may also be a good idea to sand down the surfaces to remove any irregularities.

Preferably glue onto the casing

The glue then adheres better. Avoid gluing on wallpaper if possible. It can be difficult to remove the glue without damaging the wallpaper.

Keep up a quick pace - the glue dries quickly

Hot melt glue dries quickly and immediately attains its full adhesive strength. It is therefore important to install the casing immediately once you have applied the glue. Hold the trimming firmly against the undersurface for a short time so that it sits evenly.

Glue the joints

Apply wood glue between the joints of different casing elements to hide gaps. Use a glue that is suitable for the material.
