Gluing plastic with hot melt glue

Hot melt glue works well with several types of plastic, and gives a durable bond. It can be used to fasten plastic to, for example, plastic, tiles and wood, with the advantage that you avoid drilling or nailing, and thereby damaging surfaces. Hot melt glue can also be used to repair various plastic objects.

Some plastics are difficult to glue

Some plastics, for example polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), can however have a slippery surface that makes it difficult to obtain a long-lasting result when gluing them. If you can, test glue the materials to check how durable the result is.

Choosing the right glue when you glue plastic

We recommend that you use special adhesive for plastic, as this provides extra durable adhesion. Choose a short glue stick if you are going to fasten or repair smaller objects and a long glue stick if you are going to work with larger or multiple objects.

Tips for getting the best results when gluing plastic

Make sure that the surfaces are clean and dry
Wipe off dirt and grease from the surfaces before you glue, otherwise the adhesive strength is compromised.

Sand down the surface
If it is difficult to fasten the material, it may help to carefully roughen the surface with sandpaper.

Use high temperatures
Use a glue gun that heats to a high temperature to get the best results.
